    Temperature and Frequency Dependent Empirical Models of Dielectric Properties of Sunflower and Olive Oil

    In this article, a known concept and measurement probe geometry for the estimation of the dielectric properties of oils have been adapted. The new probe enables the~measurement in the frequency range of 1 to 3000 MHz. Additionally, the measurement probe has been equipped with a~heat exchanger, which has enabled us to measure the dielectric properties of sunflower and olive oil as well as of two commercial emulsion concentrates. Subsequently, corresponding linear empirical temperature and frequency dependent models of the dielectric properties of the above mentioned oils and concentrates have been created. The dielectric properties measured here as well as the values obtained based on the empirical models created here match the data published in professional literature very well

    A Microwave Metamaterial Inspired Sensor for Non-Invasive Blood Glucose Monitoring

    In this paper, a microwave sensor based on an artificial transmission line is proposed for non-invasive blood glucose monitoring. A corresponding numerical model of the sensor implemented in microstrip technology is created in the commercial full-wave numerical simulation tool COMSOL Multiphysics and virtually tested by means of numerical simulations. Blood-glucose solution models with various blood glucose concentrations are used as a model of a biological tissue under test. Furthermore, a possible methodology for performing non-invasive tests is proposed. Sensitivity of the sensor developed here is compared to a sensor based on a section of a conventional microstrip transmission line of the same length and width

    Serendipitous Discovery and Parallax of a Nearby L Dwarf

    A field star serendipitously observed in a parallax program proved to have a proper motion of 562 mas/yr and a parallax of 82 +- 2 mas. The star is identified with 2MASS J07003664+3157266. A Keck LRIS spectrum shows its spectral type to be L3.5, as expected from its infrared and optical colors and absolute magnitude. This object had not been previously recognized as an L dwarf, perhaps because of crowding at its relatively low Galactic latitude (b = +15.8 degrees).Comment: PASP, in press. 8 pages incl.2 postscript figures, plus one jpeg figur

    Realization of Resistorless Lossless Positive and Negative Grounded Inductor Simulators Using Single ZC-CCCITA

    This paper is in continuation with the very recent work of Prasad et al. [14], wherein new realizations of grounded and floating positive inductor simulator using current differencing transconductance amplifier (CDTA) are reported. The focus of the paper is to provide alternate realizations of lossless, both positive and negative inductor simulators (PIS and NIS) in grounded form using z-copy current-controlled current inverting transconductance amplifier (ZC-CCCITA), which can be considered as a derivative of CDTA, wherein the current differencing unit (CDU) is reduced to a current-controlled current inverting unit. We demonstrate that only a single ZC-CCCITA and one grounded capacitor are sufficient to realize grounded lossless PIS or NIS. The proposed circuits are resistorless whose parameters can be controlled through the bias currents. The workability of the proposed PIS is validated by SPICE simulations on three RLC prototypes

    Study of Adjustable Gains for Control of Oscillation Frequency and Oscillation Condition in 3R-2C Oscillator

    An idea of adjustable gain in order to obtain controllable features is very useful for design of tuneable oscillators. Several active elements with adjustable properties (current and voltage gain) are discussed in this paper. Three modified oscillator conceptions that are quite simple, directly electronically adjustable, providing independent control of oscillation condition and frequency were designed. Positive and negative aspects of presented method of control are discussed. Expected assumptions of adjustability are verified experimentally on one of the presented solution

    Microwave Drying of Textile Materials and Optimization of a Resonant Applicator

    The principal aim of this work was to design and optimize the applicator for microwave drying. Our applicator is derived from the Fabry-Perrot resonator, which is an open type resonator.The whole system works at frequency 2.45 GHz and the magnetron that we used delivers power 800 W. This machine is intended for use in drying in factory production of fabrics. After identifying of the basic arrangement of the microwave drying machine, the next step in the design was the use of the electromagnetic field simulator. We determined the position of the magnetron and found the distribution of the electric field strength in drying textiles in this way. In parallel, we analyzed the drying system with analytical calculations. We created a diagram of the EM waves inside this structure and reached the resulting expression for use in calculating the strenght of the electric field in the plane of the drying textile. This quantity depends on the electrical characteristics of wet textiles, e.g. the permittivity and the loss factor. Measurements of these dielectric properties for the coburg is complicated, and this method makes it possible to solve our problem with dielectric parameters. We have SAR distribution results (by simulation and also by measurement), results of measurements of the moisture content in the dried textile with respect to time. These results are important for subsequent optimization of the efficiency of the whole machine.

    Periodic variations in the colours of the classical T Tauri star RW Aur A

    The classical T Tauri star RW Aur A is an irregular variable with a large amplitude in all photometric bands. In an extended series of photometric data we found small-amplitude periodic variations in the blue colours of the star, with a period of 2.64 days. The period was relatively stable over several years. The amplitude of the periodic signal is 0.21 mag in U-V, 0.07 mag in B-V, and about 0.02 mag in V-R and V-I. No periodicity was found in the V magnitude. The relevance of this photometric period to the recently discovered periodicity in spectral features of the star is discussed, and the hypothesis of a hot spot is critically considered.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures, uses new aa.cls, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Mid-infrared observations of the SGR 1900+14 error box

    We report on mid-infrared observations of the compact stellar cluster located in the proximity of SGR 1900+14, and the radio/X-ray position of this soft-gamma repeater. Observations were performed in May and June of 2001 when the bursting source was in an active state.
